Brown butter frosting is a delicious frosting that goes perfectly with any type of spiced cake or bar. It also goes deliciously with Banana Bread Brownies.
This is an older recipe that is not used very much anymore. I am not sure why as it has a warm deep flavor and is simply delicious. It reminds me of my Grandma who use to make this all the time.
There are only a few ingredients you will need for this frosting. You will need milk, powdered sugar, vanilla, and butter.
Start by placing your butter in a pan over medium heat until boiling.
Let the butter turn a delicate brown color and remove from heat immediately.
Add powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. Whisk together until smooth.
You should end up with a consistency that is thicker than a glaze, but thinner than frosting. If the mixture is to thick, add additional milk in small amounts until you get the desired consistency.
This frosting in the picture below is a little on the thick side, so milk was added (after the picture was taken) to make it a little thinner. Using a spatula, spread frosting on warm bars or cake. It spreads easier when they are warm.
My favorite treat to serve this yummy frosting on is Banana Bread Brownies, delicious!!!
Brown Butter Frosting:
1/2 Cup Butter
4 cups powdered sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3 Tablespoons milk
Heat butter in large saucepan over medium heat until boiling. Let the butter turn a delicate brown and remove from heat immediately.
Add powdered sugar, vanilla and milk. Whisk together until smooth (it should be thicker than a glaze, but thinner than frosting).
Using a spatula, spread the frosting over the warm bars.

Hello, can I add cream cheese to the frosting? Or will it ruin the consistency?
Julie says
You do not want to add cream cheese to this frosting, it will change the consistency and flavor of it dramatically.
